Northern University Games
The Northern University Games (NUG) is over for another year and the host team, University of New England, is celebrating after three teams took home gold medals in the Men’s Rugby Union 7s, Women’s Hockey and Women’s Football. In the women’s football, UNE placed first, second and third. UNE golfer, Mick Schaefer was also successful in winning an individual gold medal.
The NUG has been renowned for providing a friendly but competitive environment for student athletes from all over Queensland, northern New South Wales and Northern Territory, and this year was no exception.
The games saw 910 competitors, plus officials, coaches and volunteers, visit Armidale city. Eleven universities from northern NSW and Queensland were represented across the 12 sports of golf, hockey, tennis, netball, basketball, football, rugby union 7s, touch football, volleyball, squash, lawn bowls and tenpin bowling.
Recognised as the perfect opportunity for student athletes to compete in a participation based event against like minded students from across the north region, the Games has built up a reputation as an event not be missed. As in past years, the Games allowed participants to contest sporting events with a focus on competition, participation, and socialising. Armidale turned on the hospitality and blue skies, with visiting students going away with many new friends and wonderful memories.
