OzTag is a non-contact sport. Tackling is not allowed.
Instead of tackles, defenders remove one of the velcro “tags” from the attacker’s shorts to stop the play.
Each team has six tags (plays) to try to score.
If tagged, the attacker must stop, return the tag to their shorts, and perform a rollball to continue play.
Passes must go backwards or sideways – no forward passes.
Players can drop the ball, and as long as it goes backwards and isn’t knocked on, play continues.
Teams are allowed one kick per set of six tags, usually done on the last tag (6th).
Kicks must be below shoulder height and can’t be kicked again once grounded unless regathered cleanly.
A try is worth one point.
To score, the ball must be grounded over the try line without being tagged.
Must retreat 7 metres from the rollball.
Defenders can’t interfere or make contact – they must aim only to remove tags.
Offside, obstruction, contact, or forward passes result in a penalty to the other team.
All penalties are taken by a tap restart.
Each team must have a minimum of five (5) players before they can take the field, one (1) must be female. Players should be warmed up and ready to play at the exact scheduled time.
If a team is not able to take the field after five (5) minutes, one try will be scored against them for every 2 minutes thereafter and up to 3 tries.
If a team is still not able to field a team 11 minutes after the scheduled starting time they will be forfeited.
Teams that forfeit after 12pm on the day of their scheduled game will be charged a $50 late forfeit fee. This fee must be paid before the team can return to the competition.
