UNE Sports Academy was established in 2018 as a high-performance pathway for competitive athletes who choose to study at UNE. Proudly powered by SportUNE, the Academy supports student-athletes in balancing their academic commitments with the demands of elite sport.
We help develop;
Strong well-rounded student-athletes
Resilient student leaders
A thriving student-athlete community
An exceptional student experience
With access to high-performance facilities that rival the best regional sporting centres, we provide tailored support to help athletes excel both on and off the field. Our program works closely with UNE Exercise and Sports Science staff and National Sporting Organisations to deliver personalised training plans that meet each athlete’s unique needs.
Leading our program is Matt Pine, former Sydney Swans strength and conditioning coach, who offers one-on-one guidance and expert training support to our student-athletes.
The program also includes an Academic Support Team and a Physiotherapist, ensuring that student-athletes can effectively balance their studies, training, and overall wellbeing.
A key focus of the Academy is to provide academic support, leadership development, personal branding, and mental health education, equipping our athletes with the skills and resilience needed to succeed both in sport and beyond.
Applications and Expressions of Interest are open for future and current students!
The UNE Sports Academy is a game changer as the only regional based University to set up a supportive pathway for aspiring student athletes in the country.
UNE is also a member of the Australian Institute of Sport’s Elite Sport Education Network (ESEN). This program supports Australia’s elite athletes, high-performance coaches, and professionals within the high-performance system, enabling them to excel both in their sport and academic pursuits.
To qualify for the UNE Sports Academy, you must be enrolled at UNE. Priority will be given to on-campus students or off-campus students based in the Armidale area.
Who Should Apply?
Applications are assessed on merit in collaboration with the relevant sporting organisation and the UNE student success team. Academic performance will also be considered.
If you’re aiming to elevate your sporting achievements, we host talent identification testing days leading up to each academic year. Ideally, applicants should have represented at the regional level or above in their sport within the last 12 months. This is a guideline, and our team is open to discussing opportunities with all sporting students.
Expressions of interest are now open for UNE Sports Academy.
