1. The Bill Hanlan Shield shall be presented to a student of UNE who, whilst displaying good sportsmanship, has reached a higher level of achievement in sport than all other students of UNE. This achievement should have occurred during the twelve months preceding the award, and whilst enrolled at the university.
2. The president of each SportUNE club shall be entitled to nominate one member of their club for the award each year. Additionally, the SportUNE management committee shall be entitled to submit one nomination in respect of each sport not represented by a SportUNE affiliated club.

Requirements

(1)    To qualify for an award a member shall:

• Be enrolled in a degree or diploma at the University of New England.
• Have completed at least two semesters at the University.
• In sports conducted on a UNE club basis, be recommended by the UNE Club concerned, or external students be recommended by their affiliated sporting club/organisation.

Only in exceptional circumstances will an award be made to a member who has completed less than two semesters of study.

The Blues committee will also consider nominees in their year of graduation, who have achieved the standard outlines in (2) below where the representative achievement has been attained following the previous Blues committee and prior to graduation.

(2)    There shall be two classes of awards:

• Blue: The blue shall be awarded to members who have shown outstanding ability, normally when representing the University, and who have reached a standard comparable to that generally achieved by the best sportspersons in other Australian universities. Also, to be eligible for the award of a Blue, a member shall have displayed good sportsmanship and support for the UNE club making the nomination or contributed towards sport at UNE
• Half-Blue: the Half-Blue shall be awarded to members who, normally when representing the university, have achieved a standard in their sport well above average for Australian universities. Also, to be eligible for the award of Half-Blue, a member shall have displayed good sportsmanship and support for the UNE club making the nomination or contributed towards sport at UNE.
