Understanding UV and Protecting Your Health on Campus

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and the biggest reason is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. The good news? It’s also one of the most preventable health risks.

What is UV?

UV radiation is part of the sun’s energy that we can’t see or feel, but can still damage our skin and eyes. Over time, this damage builds up and significantly increases the risk of skin cancer.

In fact, UV exposure is the major cause of skin cancer, and event short, repeated exposure can contribute to long-term harm.

What is the UV index?

The UV index is a simple tool that tells you how strong the sun’s UV radiation is on any given day.

  • Low: 1-2
  • Moderate: 3-5
  • High: 6-7
  • Very High: 8-10
  • Extreme: 11+

Once the UV index reaches 3 or above, sun protection is recommended. At this level, UV can damage your skin, even if the temperature is cool or the weather is cloudy.

Why this matters on campus

In NSW, UV levels are high enough to cause damage year round, not just summer. That means everyday activities such as walking between classes, training outside, spectating sport or just sitting outside, can all contribute to long-term UV exposure.

How to protect yourself (the SunSmart way)

When the UV is 3 or above, follow these five simple steps:

  • Slip on protective clothing
  • Slop on SPF 50+ sunscreen
  • Slap on a hat
  • Seek shade
  • Slide on sunglasses

These small actions, done consistently, can significantly reduce your risk.

Make it a daily habit

The easiest way to stay protected is to check the UV index each day and build sun safety into your routine.

Remember:

  • UV is not the same as temperature
  • You can still get burnt on cloudy or cool days
  • Damage adds up over time, even in short burts

Healthy Campus Tip

If you’re heading outside between classes, meetings, training or events – pause, check the UV, and protect your skin. It’s a small habit that makes a big difference over time. Did you know? SportUNE has free sunscreen available at reception, so please make sure to grab some before heading outside next time you are in!
